1-993072 072 F-86 SABRE ACES OF THE 4TH FIGHTER WING The entry of the United State's premier jet interceptor into the Korean War was triggered by the ever-increasing presence of the Soviet-built MiG-15 south of the Yalu River. The possibility of the USAF losing air supremacy over the Korean Peninsula was unacceptable. The 4th Fighter Wing got the call for combat in Korea. They were made up of a combination of new pilots right out of jet training and the older combat veterans of World War II vintage. This combination of pilot types wrote and re-wrote the text books on jet warfare. Of the 40 jet aces that the war produced, the 4th Wing boasted 24 of them. This book details these incredible pilots and the planes they flew. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2006 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993108 Blake, Steve 108 P-38 Lightning Aces of the 82nd Fighter Group When the 82nd Fighter Group was organized in March 1942, most of its initial pilot cadre was comprised of newly graduated staff sergeant pilots of Class 42-C - enlisted men! They learned to fly the P-38 at Muroc, in California's Mojave Desert, and then moved to the Los Angeles area to continue their training and to serve as part of its air defense.

In September 1942, the group was transported to the East Coast, from where it shipped out to Ireland on the Queen Mary. By this time all its remaining sergeant pilots had been commissioned. As of VE-Day the 82nd Fighter Group's score of confirmed aerial victories stood at 548 aircraft shot down, plus a huge amount of enemy materiel - including aircraft - destroyed on the ground and the sea. It had been awarded three Distinguished Unit Citations. The cost of this success was high, however, for around 250 of the group's pilots had either been killed in action or captured. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2012 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993096 Bucholtz, Chris 096 Mustang Aces of the 357 Fighter Group The 357th Fighter Group produced 42 aces, more than any other group within the USAAF. It was also the first group in the Eighth Air Force to be equipped with the P-51. Thanks to this fighter and the talented pilots assigned to the group (men such as Bud Anderson, Kit Carson, John England, and Chuck Yeager) the 357th achieved a faster rate of aerial victories than any other Eighth Air Force group during the final year of the war.

It also claimed the highest number of aerial kills - 56 - in a single mission. The group was awarded two Distinguished Unit Citations (the unit equivalent of the Medal of Honor). This book is crammed full of first-hand accounts, superb photography, and some of the most colorful profiles to be found in World War II aviation.

1-993136 Chapis, Stephen 136 ALLIED JET KILLERS OF WORLD WAR 2 Allied fighter pilots began encountering German jets - principally the outstanding Me 262 fighter - from the autumn of 1944. Stunned by the aircraft's speed and rate of climb, it took USAAF and RAF units time to work out how to combat this deadly threat as the Luftwaffe targeted the medium and heavy bombers attacking targets across the Reich.

A number of high-scoring aces from the Eighth Air Force (Drew, Glover, Meyer, Norley, and Yeager, to name but a few) succeeded in claiming Me 262s, Me 163, and Ar 234s during the final months of the campaign, as did RAF aces like Tony Gaze and 'Foob' Fairbanks. The exploits of both famous and little-known pilots will be chronicled in this volume, detailing how they pushed their P-47s, P-51s, Spitfires, and Tempests to the limits of their performance in order to down the Luftwaffe's 'wonder weapons.' 1 vol, 96 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993126 Chenung, Raymond 126 ACES OF THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA AIR FORCE The ace pilots of the Republic of China Air Force have long been shrouded in mystery and obscurity, as their retreat to Taiwan in 1949 and blanket martial law made records of the RoCAF all but impossible to access. Now, for the first time, the colorful story of these aces can finally be told.

Using the latest research based on released archival information and full-color illustrations, this book charts the history of the top scoring pilots of the RoCAF from the beginning of the grueling, eight-year Sino-Japanese War to the conclusion of the Civil War against the Chinese Communists. Beginning as a ragged and very disparate group of planes and pilots drawn from various provincial air forces, the RoCAF gradually became standardized and was brought under American tutelage. Altogether it produced 17 aces who scored kills whilst flying a startling variety of aircraft, from biplanes to F-86 Sabres. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2015 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993115 Cleaver, Thomas McKelvey 115 ACES OF THE 78TH FIGHTER GROUP Dubbed the 'Eagles of Duxford', the 78th Fighter Group (FG) was unique in being the only fighter unit in the 'Mighty Eighth' to fly the P-38 Lightning, P-47 Thunderbolt, and P-51 Mustang operationally. Arriving in the European Theater of Operations (ETO) in November 1942, and eventually committed to combat five months later, the 78th, along with the 4th and 56th FGs, 'wrote the book' on long-range fighter escort by VIII Fighter Command in the ETO.

This volume charts the group's highs and lows during its two years in action from Duxford, focusing on the exploits of the 51 pilots who achieved ace status with the 78th during World War 2. These men included Capt Charles London, the very first Eighth Air Force ace, and Maj Quince Brown, who was the 78th's most successful aerial ace prior to being murdered by the SS after he was shot down over Germany. By VE Day, the 'Eagles of Duxford' had downed 316 aircraft and destroyed a further 320 machines on the ground during strafing attacks on German airfields. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2013 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993125 Cleaver, Thomas McKelvey 125 F4F WILDCAT and F6F HELLCAT ACES of VF-2 The first VF-2 was a prewar unit that had been dubbed the 'hottest outfit afloat' due to the skill of their non-commissioned pilots. This first unit only saw combat at the Battle of the Coral Sea, although VF-2 pilots flying Grumman F4F Wildcats were able to rack up 17 claims there during the bitter 48-hour period of fighting.

The second 'Fighting Two' was armed with the new Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat fighter. Arriving in Hawaii in October 1943, the squadron so impressed Cdr Edward H 'Butch' O'Hare, the Medal of Honor-winning first US Navy ace of World War 2, that he requested the squadron replace VF-6 in his CAG-6 aboard USS Enterprise.

No unit US Navy unit created more aces than VF-2, whose pilots went into action over the Carolines, Marianas, Guam, Iwo Jima and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Using exquisite photographs and first-hand accounts from the elite fliers themselves, this volume tells the story of the ace pilots who comprised the original VF-2 and the second. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2015 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993099 Forsyth, Robert 099 Aces of the Legion Condor For Germany, the Spanish Civil War proved a perfect testing ground for new technologies and tactics. During the war, some 19,000 German 'volunteers' formed an aviation group called the Legion Condor in support of the fascists. Originally flying He-51s, they were soon upgraded to 109s. These fighters proved dominant in the Spanish skies, and many members of the legion scored five or more kills during the fighting 1 vol, 112 pgs 2011 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993101 Forsyth, Robert 101 Luftwaffe Viermot Aces 1942-45 'Viermot Aces' were pilots who shot down five or more USAAF and RAF bombers during the daylight Defense of the Reich missions from May 1942 through to VE Day. This book tells the complete story of the men and the planes that challenged the great bomber offensive. Flying a number of different aircraft including the Bf 110G, Me 210, and the Me 410, they fought their desperate battles against the numerous machine guns of B-17s and Lancasters. This book also covers the 'jet aces' that flew the Me 262 jet-powered interceptors in the closing days of the war to wage a desperate last-ditch fight against the endless Allied bomber fleets.

1-993133 Forsyth, Robert 133 JU 88 ACES OF WORLD WAR 2 Initially designed as a fast medium bomber, the Junkers Ju 88 was also used as a Zerstorer heavy fighter by the Luftwaffe. It saw its combat debut over Poland in 1939, and heavy fighter variants saw action on every front up to VE Day. The ultimate Ju 88 fighter variant was the G-model of 1944, which boasted a FuG 220 or 227 radar, an astounding array of cannon and machine gun armament, and advanced Junkers Jumo or BMW engines.

A dedicated nightfighter, the first Ju 88G-1s entered service with the Nachtjagd in the summer of 1944, replacing Ju 88C/Rs as well as some Bf 110Gs. Despite suffering heavy losses in the final months of the war, Ju 88Gs also inflicted serious casualties on Bomber Command throughout the war.

JU-88s patrolled over the Bay of Biscay, opposed Allied convoys around the Arctic circle, and, most successfully, engaged RAF heavy bombers as radar-equipped nightfighters in defense of the Reich. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2019 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993134 Forsyth, Robert 134 JAGDGESCHWADER 1 'Oesau' Aces 1939-45 Formed shortly after the outbreak of World War 2, and equipped with Messerschmitt Bf 109Es, Jagdgeschwader 1 was initially tasked to defend the regional North Sea and Baltic coastal areas and Germany's main port cities and naval bases. The greatest task for JG 1 though came after 1942 in its defense of the Reich against the US Eighth Air Force's B-17s and B-24s, bearing the brunt of defense against increasingly regular, larger and deep penetrating USAAF daylight bomber raids with fighter escort. Levels of attrition subsequently grew, but so did experience among the leading aces, who were often the subject of propaganda films and literature.

Many of Germany's most famous World War 2 aces flew with JG 1 including Herbert Ihlefeld (132 victories), Heinz Bar (220) and Walter Oesau (127), piloting Bf 109Es, Fw 190s and the Heinkel 162 jet fighter. Packed with photographs and profile artwork and revealing first-hand accounts, this is the compelling story of the Luftwaffe fighter pilots who battled to defend the skies of Germany. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993132 Goss, Chris 132 JAGDGESCHWADER 53 'PIK-AS' Bf 109 ACES OF 1940 Boasting pilots who had been blooded in the Spanish Civil War, Jagdgeschwader 53 (JG 53) 'Pik As' or 'Ace of Spades' achieved great success in the skies over France and Britain in 1940. It was infamous amongst its opponents for the quality and caliber of its aces - men such as Werner Molders, Hans-Karl Mayer, and Rolf Pingel. These aces won numerous Knight's Crosses for their exploits in 1940, credited with 258 victories, with 51 pilots being killed or captured. This study follows these pilots of JG 53 into battle, telling the stories of their victories, losses, and ultimate fate.

1-993097 Guttman, Jon 097 NAVAL ACES OF WORLD WAR I: Part 1 In the first of a two-part study covering all of the naval fighter pilots to achieve ace status during World War I, author and artist Jon Guttman examines the elite members of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). The first to employ Sopwith's excellent line of scouts, such as the Pup, Triplane and Camel, some of the RNAS pilots such as Raymond Collishaw, Robert A Little, and Roderick Stanley Dallas rated among the most successful fighter pilots in the British Commonwealth. This book covers all of the members of the RNAS who 'made ace.' The Second Volume will cover the naval aces from the other participants in the war.

1-993104 Guttman, Jon 104 NAVAL ACES OF WORLD WAR I: Part 2 This second Naval Aces of World War I book looks at the many flying naval heroes who served alongside or against those of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). While the RNAS operated its own formidable arsenal of Nieuport and Sopwith scouts over the Flanders coast, the German Navy countered with its own Land Feld Jagdstaffeln and Seefront Staffeln.

Unique to World War I was the use of flying boats as fighters in combat, which figured at least partially in the scores of Russian aces Aleksandr de Seversky and Mikhail Safanov. The best flying boat fighter, however, was Italy's Macchi M 5, flown by three aces and also the mount of Charles H Hammann, the first American to earn the Medal of Honor in aerial combat. Also unique were the sole US Navy ace, David Ingalls, who scored his six victories while attached to No 213 Sqn RAF, and Greek ace Artitides Moraitinis, credited with nine victories over Salonika and the Dardanelles. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2012 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993123 Guttman, Jon 123 RECONNAISSANCE AND BOMBER ACES of World War 1 Often overshadowed by the fighters that either protected or threatened them, two-seater reconnaissance aircraft performed the oldest and most strategically vital aerial task of World War 1 - a task that required them to return with the intelligence they gathered at all costs. Bomber sorties were equally important and dangerous, and the very nature of both types of mission required going in harm's way.

A remarkable number of British, French and German two-seater teams managed to attain or exceed the five victories needed to achieve the acedom popularly associated with their single-seat nemeses, and in this book, with rich illustrations and first-hand accounts of the veterans themselves, they receive their long-overdue recognition. Many high-scoring single-seat fighter aces also began their careers in two-seaters, particularly in the early stages of the conflict, and their exploits as either pilots or observers are detailed here too.

Contents: Chapter 1: Not Exactly Helpless, Chapter 2: Britons in Harm's Way, Chapter 3: French Aces - Fighting Their Way Home, Chapter 4: Germans Under Fire, Chapter 5: Austria-Hungary's Old Reliables, Chapter 6: Aggressive Americans, and Appendices - List of all two-seater aces -Plates commentary. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2015 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993114 Hillman, Nicholas 114 Ki-61 and Ki-100 Aces This is the story of the elite Japanese Army Air force (JAAF) aces that flew the Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien (Swallow), and the Ki-100 Goshikisen in the Pacific Theatre of World War 2. The former, codenamed 'Tony' by the allies, was a technically excellent aircraft, possessing power, stability and a good rate of climb - differing radically from the usual Japanese philosophy of building light, ultra-manoeuvrable fighters. Its pilots soon realised, however, that the type was plagued by a number of dangerous mechanical issues. Then as the war moved relentlessly closer to Japan's doorstep, a desperate, expedient innovation to the Ki-61 airframe by fitting it with a radial instead of inline engine resulted in one of the finest fighters of World War 2 - the Ki-100.

This book uses the latest findings to provide a gripping account of some of the most remarkable and hard-pressed fighter pilots of the war. It reveals how these men, unlike so many of their unfortunate late-war colleagues, could surprise Allied aircraft in high-performance fighters and claim successes in the face of enormous odds. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2013 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993117 Ivie, Tom 117 ACES OF THE 325th FIGHTER GROUP The 325th FG was activated under General Order number 50 on 30 July 1942 and set up training operations at Theodore F Greene Field in Providence, Rhode Island. By mid-December 1942 the group was considered ready for combat and the alert for overseas duty arrived on 2 January 1943.

The pilots and their P-40s departed on the carrier USS Ranger on 8 January and flew their aircraft off the vessel into Cazes airfield, near Casablanca, on 19 January 1943. After the remainder of the personnel arrived in late February, the group prepared for combat and flew its first mission on 17 April 1943 as part of the Twelfth Air Force. During the next four months, it participated in the North African campaign and operations against enemy-held islands in the Mediterranean Sea.

By the end of the Sicilian campaign on 17 August the 325th FG had scored 128 aerial victories, been the first P-40 unit to deliver 1,000-lb bombs against enemy targets, and had escorted 1,100 bombers without losing a single one of them to enemy action. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2013 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993102 Khazanov, Dmitriy 102 MiG-3 ACES OF WORLD WAR 2 The MiG-1/3 family of fighters was built to satisfy a Soviet Air Force requirement for an advanced, fast, high-altitude fighter. Entering service in the spring of 1941, the problematic MiG-1 had its handling issues rectified with the hasty production of the MiG-3. Many of these were destroyed on the ground when the Germans launched Operation Barbarossa. Nevertheless, enough examples survived to allow pilots such as Stepan Suprun and Aleksandr Pokryshkin to claim a number of victories in the type. This book tells the complete story of the men who made ace in the first examples of the famous MiG fighter. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2012 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993111 Kulikov, Victor 111 RUSSIAN ACES OF WORLD WAR 1 Although the Russian Imperial Army Air Service consisted of no more than four BAGs (Boevaya Aviatsionniy Gruppa - battle aviation groups), each controlling three or four smaller AOIs (Aviatsionniy Otryad Istrebitelei - fighter aviation detachments) equipped with a variety of aircraft types, its fighter pilots nevertheless gave a good account of themselves.

Indeed, during three years of war they claimed more than 200 Austro-Hungarian and German aircraft shot down, creating 13 aces - these elite aviators accounted for around half of the victories claimed on the Eastern Front. Pilots flew a variety of fighter types, with French Nieuport scouts and SPAD VIIs proving to be the most popular, and effective, airplanes to see service on this front.

The exploits of these aces are detailed here, with information based on material newly sourced by the author from Russian military and private archives. Many previously unpublished photographs are used to illustrate this book, supported by full-color profiles that reveal how striking some of the aces' fighters were in this often-forgotten theater of World War I. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2013 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993129 Laurier, Jim 129 J2M RAIDEN and N1K1/2 SHIDEN/SHIDEN-KAI Aces Although seen as a replacement for the A6M Zero-sen carrier-based fighter, the Mitsubishi J2M Raiden was actually designed as a land-based naval interceptor optimized for speed rather than maneuverability. Engine cooling problems for its Mitsubishi Kasai 23 engine, airflow, and flight control issues plagued the Raiden's development, but despite these production delays, aces Sadaaki Akamatsu, Yoshihiro Aoki, Susumu Ito, and Susumu Ishihara all claimed significant scores in the Raiden. Kawanishi's N1K family of fighters were privately developed by the manufacturer from the N1K Kyofu floatplane fighter.

Again plagued by structural and engine maladies, the N1K1-J Shiden eventually entered front-line service in time to see considerable action in the doomed defense of the Philippines in October 1944. Despite suffering heavy losses, the units equipped with new fighter proved that the N1K could more than hold its own against P-38s and F6Fs. The improved N1K2-J Shiden-KAI started to reach the front line by late 1944 - in time for defense of the Home Islands. Here, it proved to be the best IJN fighter of the war. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2016 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993094 Logoluso, Alfredo 094 Fiat CR.32 Aces of the Spanish Civil War The CR.32 Falco was a handsome and highly maneuverable biplane fighter. During General Franco's fight with the Republicans for the control of Spain from 1936 - 1939, no fewer than 477 CR.32s were involved, with an astounding 709 confirmed aerial victories, and an additional 320 kills claimed, for just 62 losses. As these statistics reveal, the CR.32 was the unrivaled master of the skies over Spain. By the war's end, the five leading aces of the conflict were all Spanish CR.32 pilots. Their exploits, and those of the other leading CR.32 aces, are examined for the first time in English in this exciting volume.

1-993106 Lopez, Rafael A 106 SPANISH REPUBLICAN ACES At the start of the Spanish Civil War, most young fighter pilot officers joined the rebels, while the high ranking officers, grupo or escuadrilla commanders, and the NCOs, sergeants and corporals remained loyal to the government. Mostly flying the obsolete Nieuport Ni.52s these loyalists were soon outpaced by the more modern Fiat CR.32s and Heinkel He 51s.

However, at this early stage of the war, there were several Republican airmen who became aces and famous in the process, despite the small numbers of enemy aircraft shot down. Widely speaking, the Republican military aviation did not keep an exhaustive record of individual shooting claims. However, sufficient documentation exists to make a reasonable assumption as to which pilots fall into the ace category. This volume details the exploits of those pilots, complementing previous works in the Osprey Aircraft of the Aces series on Nationalist CR.32 Aces and Polikarpov I-15, I-16 and I-152 Aces. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2012 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993127 Matusiak, Wojtek 127 POLISH SPITFIRE ACES Of all Allied airmen, Polish pilots had had the most experience of fighting the Luftwaffe by the time the war came to Britain. As the Battle of Britain raged, they quickly proved themselves as highly aggressive and skilful interceptors, especially when flying the famous Spitfire. The Polish Air Force eventually became the largest non-Commonwealth Spitfire operator, using some 1,500 Mks I, II, V, IX and XVI to devastating effect.

Top scoring USAAF ace of the ETO, Francis 'Gabby' Gabreski and a whole host of other Allied and Commonwealth aces flew with Polish squadrons, adding even more to their fighting quality. Conversely, several Polish pilots were attached to other Allied squadrons throughout the war, demonstrating their prowess alongside airmen from a whole host of nations. From an expert on Polish fighter aviation, this is a peerless account of the fiery, talented Polish 'Spit' pilots, whose country had been overrun and whose aggression and determination to shoot down Axis aircraft was unmatched. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2015 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993100 Millman, Nicholas 100 KI-44: 'Tojo' Aces of World War 2 The Ki-44 'Tojo' epitomizes JAAF air power in defense of the homeland, but was also used extensively in the skies over China. The introduction of the Ki-44 was noted with concern because of its departure from the performance and tactics previously associated with the JAAF. It was a fast-climbing, heavily armed point-defense interceptor that was used successfully in slashing hit-and-run tactics that caught Allied pilots by surprise. Amongst the numerous aces that flew Ki-44's were Major Akira Watanabe of the 33rd Sentai, Captain Yukiyoshi Wakamatsu (the 'Red Nose Ace' of the 85th Sentai), and Warrant Officer Rikio Shibata also of the 85th Sentai, a leading ace with claims for 27 aircraft. 1-993103 Millman, Nicholas 103 Ki-27 'Nate' Aces The Ki-27 achieved its first successes during the so-called 'China Incident'. These were the glory days for the JAAF and many of the successful 97 Sen pilots went on to become the outstanding leaders and veteran aces of the Pacific War. Initially facing more modern Allied types of fighter, the 97 Sen was more than able to hold its own by exploiting its outstanding aerobatic qualities. But the writing was on the wall for unarmored aircraft as the Allies consolidated and began their fight back.

By 1943 it was considered obsolete but was still being encountered in combat by Allied pilots, especially in the air defense role. The Ki-27 also found an important secondary role as an armed fighter trainer, equipping an important number of training units and flying schools, but was essentially retired from combat. This book tells the complete story of this special aircraft and its part in Japanese military history. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2013 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993137 Millman, Nicholas 137 A6M ZERO-SEN ACES 1940-42 The Mitsubishi A6M Zero-sen was Japan's Spitfire. In continuous development and operational service from the time of the Sino-Japanese war in 1940 to the end of the Pacific War in 1945, it is held in almost mythical awe, similar to Britain's legendary fighter aircraft.

At the time of its operational debut, the fighter's design features offered the revolutionary combination of an all-round vision canopy, cannon armament and a jettisonable drop tank giving it phenomenal range. Together with the flying and tactical proficiency of superbly trained pilots, this made the Zero-sen a true strategic fighter, spearheading Japan's offensive in the Pacific. It was also the mount of a plethora of successful and flamboyant naval aces engaged in both sea and land campaigns.

This volume, the first of two on the A6M Zero-sen, covers the use of the A6M2 variant from its debut in China to the Solomons Campaign, and also tells the story of the A6M2-N 'Rufe' floatplane fighter aces. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2019 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993107 Rybin, Yurly 107 Soviet Hurricane Aces of World War 2 Following the destruction wrought on the Red Army Air Forces during the first days of Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, the Soviet Union found itself desperately short of fighter aircraft. Premier Josef Stalin duly appealed directly to Prime Minister Winston Churchill for replacement aircraft, and in late 1941 the British delivered the first of 3360 Hurricanes that would be supplied to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease agreement.

Specifically requested by the USSR, the Hurricanes were quickly thrown into action in early 1942 - the Soviet Air Forces' most difficult year in their opposition to the Luftwaffe. Virtually all the Hurricanes were issued to Soviet fighter regiments in the northern sector of the front, where pilots were initially trained to fly the aircraft by RAF personnel that had accompanied the early Hawker fighters to the USSR. The Hurricane proved to be an easy aircraft to master, even for the poorly trained young Soviet pilots, allowing the Red Army to form a large number of new fighter regiments quickly in the polar area. In spite of a relatively poor top speed, and only a modest rate-of-climb, the Hurricane was the mount of at least 17 Soviet aces. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2012 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993120 Stanaway, John 120 P-38 Lightning Aces 1942-43 The first P-38s became operational with the 1st Fighter Group in April 1941, and the initial combat deployments were made in Alaska, the Southwest Pacific, and North Africa during the latter part of 1942. Photographic reconnaissance versions of the P-38 were in action even sooner when F-4 (P-38E) models were rushed to frontline units a few months after Pearl Harbor.

Often using modified field measures to equip aircraft and train pilots in this demanding fighter, early pilots created a remarkable record of accomplishments that displayed a high degree of courage and innovation. The US deployed P-38s to every theater in WWII and more than 60 Lightning pilots were credited with at least five victories by the end of 1943.

Featuring illustrations depicting P-38 models from the E to the H-5 previously not known to the general public, unpublished photographs, and new data, this volume presents a comprehensive and innovative account of some of these lesser known aces.

1-993112 Stenman, Kari 112 FOKKER D.XXI ACES OF WORLD WAR 2 The Dutch D.XXIs saw less than a week of action following the German invasion of the west on 10 May 1940, with many of the country's 28 fighters being destroyed on the ground. However, those that survived the initial onslaught inflicted losses on the Luftwaffe. However, the D.XXI had found everlasting fame in Finland during the Winter War of 1939-40.

Proving itself a real thorn in the side of the Soviets, the fighter, operating in primitive conditions and against vastly superior numbers, Finnish D.XXIs racked up an incredible score against the Red Air Force. The D.XXI also has the distinction of producing the first 'ace in a single mission' in World War 2, when then 1Lt Jorma Sarvanto shot down six Ilyushin DB-3 bombers on 6 January 1940. After spending a year providing home defence and flying coastal patrols during the early stages of the Continuation War in 1941, all surviving Finnish Fokker D.XXIs were relegated to the reconnaissance role, which they performed through to the end of hostilities in September 1944. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2013 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993121 Stenman, Karl 121 MORANE-SAULNIER MS.406 ACES The MS.406 was an important aircraft not only because it was built in larger numbers than any other French fighter of the period, but also because it was the first modern fighter in the Armee de l'Air inventory. Although comparable to the British Hurricane and early models of the German Bf 109, it was outclassed when flown against the more powerful, and faster, Bf 109E.

With little or no protection (no armor or self-sealing tanks), the MS.406 sustained heavy losses during the Battle of France. Too lightly armed, and fitted with unreliable weaponry, the French fighter struggled to down German bombers. It therefore comes as no surprise that only a dozen French pilots became fully fledged aces on the type during this period, despite the aircraft being present in significant numbers. However a score of pilots, who bagged their very first kills at the controls of the MS.406, fought on after the fall of France, flying Dewoitine D.520s, Spitfires, and even Soviet Yak-3s to attain ace status against both Allied and Axis opponents.

1-993105 Thomas, Andrew 105 DEFIANT, BLENHEIM AND HAVOC ACES The Blenheim IF flew some of Fighter Command's early offensive operations, and the type soon proved vulnerable when pitted against single-seat fighters. However, for much of 1940 the Blenheim fighter squadrons provided the RAF's main long-range convoy escort and nightfighter capability.

In the mid-1930s, in an attempt to capitalise on its expertise in power-operated gun turrets, the Boulton Paul Company developed the Defiant, a single-engined fighter in which all the armament was concentrated in the turret behind the pilot. Intended as a 'bomber destroyer', the Defiant had its combat debut over Dunkirk, and initially achieved some considerable success.

A number of American-built aircraft called Douglas DB-7 light bombers (named Havoc by the RAF), were fitted with radar for nightfighter duties and others successfully replaced the Blenheim as night intruders. A total of 11 pilots claimed five or more victories when flying these three types to become aces, whilst no fewer than 33 who became aces claimed at least part of their scores when flying the Blenheim, Defiant, or Havoc. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2012 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993113 Thomas, Andrew 113 V1 FLYING BOMB ACES Shortly after the Allied landings in France the Germans unleashed the first of their so-called 'revenge weapons', the V1 flying bomb. Launched from specially constructed sites in northern France, the fast, small, pulse-jet powered pilotless aircraft were aimed at London with the sole intent of destroying civilian morale to the point where the British government would be forced to sue for peace.

This dangerous new threat drew an immediate response, and the Air Defense of Great Britain (as Fighter Command had been temporarily renamed) established layers of defense that included a gun line and balloon barrage. The main element, however, were standing patrols by the fastest piston-engined fighters available to the RAF - the new Tempest V and Griffon-powered Spitfire XIV. Other types were allocated too, most notably the Polish Mustang wing, while night defense was left in the capable hands of several dedicated Mosquito squadrons.

Although pilotless, the V1 was no easy foe thanks to its speed, powerful warhead, and sheer unpredictability. Nevertheless, 154 pilots became V1 aces, 25 of whom were also aces against manned aircraft. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2013 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

Based at airfields throughout southern England, Merlin engine Spitfires provided the bulk of the air cover for the D-Day landings and it was an RCAF Spitfire which claimed the first ever ME 262 jet kill. 36 color profiles covering a broad spectrum of nationalities, units, pilots, theaters and markings complement thorough research throughout this comprehensive account of these crucial fighter aircraft.

1-993130 Toperczer, Istvan 130 MIG-17/19 ACES OF THE VIETNAM WAR The Vietnam People's Air Force (VPAF) at the beginning of the Vietnam War were equipped with slow, old Korean War generation fighters -- a combination of MiG-17s and MiG-19s -- that should have offered little opposition to the cutting-edge fighter-bombers such as the F-4 Phantom II, F-105 Thunderchief, and the F-8 Crusader. Yet when the USAF and US Navy unleashed their aircraft on North Vietnam in 1965, the inexperienced pilots of the VPAF were able to shatter the illusion of US air superiority.

Taking advantage of their jet's unequaled low-speed maneuverability, small size, and powerful cannon armament they were able to take the fight to their missile-guided opponents, with a number of Vietnamese pilots racking up ace scores.

Packed with information previously unavailable in the west and only recently released from archives in Vietnam, this is the first major analysis of the exploits of Vietnamese pilots in the David and Goliath contest with the US over the skies of Vietnam. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2016 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993135 Toperczer, Istvan 135 MiG-21 ACES OF THE VIETNAM WAR Having learned their trade on the subsonic MiG-17, pilots of the Vietnamese People's Air Force (VPAF) received their first examples of the legendary MiG-21 supersonic fighter in 1966. Soon thrown into combat over North Vietnam, the guided-missile equipped MiG-21 proved a deadly opponent for the US Air Force, US Navy and US Marine Corps crews striking at targets deep in communist territory.

Although the communist pilots initially struggled to come to terms with the fighter's air-search radar and weapons systems, the ceaseless cycle of combat operations quickly honed their skills. Indeed, by the time the last US aircraft (a B-52) was claimed by the VPAF on 28 December 1972, no fewer than 13 pilots had become aces flying the MiG-21.

Fully illustrated with wartime photographs and detailed color artwork plates, and including enthralling combat reports, this book examines the many variants of the MiG-21 that fought in the conflict, the schemes they wore, and the pilots that flew them. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993118 VabWyngarden, Greg 118 ACES OF JAGDSTAFFEL 17 -- WWI Initially formed to assist in the defense of the city of Metz against French bombing raids, Royal Prussian Jagdstaffel 17 would go on to become one of the most distinguish German fighter units of World War I.

Its first victory was scored by the pilot whose story is inextricably interwoven with that of his unit - the 'Blue Max' recipient Julius Buckler. He was largely responsible for inspiring the unit's unique esprit de corps, expressed in its famous and unique 'battle-cry' of 'Malaula!' Indeed, in its final days, the unit gained the nickname Zirkus Buckler, or the 'Buckler Circus'.

Besides Buckler, Jasta 17 boasted such aces as Karl Strasser, Alfred Fleischer, and Christian Donhauser. In addition, the roster included colorful characters like the successful Jewish airman Jakob Wolff, who at over 48 years of age was the oldest German fighter pilot of the war. The story of this illustrious unit is told with many first-hand accounts by Buckler, Fleischer, and others, as well as dozens of rare archival photos of the unit's beautifully decorated fighter aircraft. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2013 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993128 VanWyngarden, Geg 128 - ACES OJ JAGDGESCHWADER III Royal Prussian Jagdgeschwader Nr III was the third of Germany's vaunted fighter wings to be formed during World War I. Commanded by the Pour le Merite winner and well-respected ace Hauptmann Bruno Loerzer for its entire existence, it was composed of the celebrated Jasta 'Boelcke', along with Jagdstaffeln 26, 27 and 36. Equipped largely with the new Fokker triplane, these four units would play an important role in the Kaiserschlacht as part of the 17th Armee.

As Germany's fortunes waned in the summer of 1918, the aces of JG III nonetheless did their best to stem the tides of British, French, and later American aircraft they encountered. Aces such as Carl Bolle, Paul Baumer, Heinrich Bongartz, Hermann Frommherz, Rudolf Klimke, and the infamous Hermann Goring all carved their names in the record books flying in this formidable formation. This book examines the tactics, achievements, and personalities of one of the deadliest of Germany's aerial units. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2015 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993110 Varriale, Paul 110 Austro-Hungarian Albatros Aces of World War 1 Austro-Hungarian industry produced a series of poor fighter types such as the Phonix D I and Hansa-Brandenburg D I during the early stages of the war, and it was not until licence-built examples of the battle-proven Albatros and D II and D III began to reach Fliegerkompagnien, or Fliks, in May 1917 that the fortunes of pilots began to look up. Unlike the German-built Albatrosen, the Oeffag aircraft were far more robust than German D IIs and D IIIs. They also displayed superior speed, climb, manoeuvrability and infinitely safer flight characteristics.

The careful cross-checking of Allied sources with Austrian and German records form the basis for a detailed reconstruction of the dogfights fought by the leading aces. It will also chart the careers of the Austro-Hungarian aces that flew the D II and D III, their successes and their defeats, with additional information about their personal background and their post-war lives in the nations born from the collapse of the Hapsburg Empire. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2012 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993076 Weal , John 076 MORE Bf 109 ACES OF THE RUSSIAN FRONT The four-year long Eastern Front campaign fought between Germany and the Soviet Union produced not only the greatest number of aces, but also the highest individual and unit scores ever recorded in the history of aerial warfare. Fully illustrated volume covers the Luftwaffe fighter pilots credited with scores of between 50 and 100 -- every single one of them amassing a greater number of victories than the highest and most celebrated of any British or American World War II ace.

Despite these huge personal totals, the names of these pilots who fought against the Red Air Force remain almost unknown to many English speaking readers. More Bf 109 Aces of the Russian Front rectifies that omission, providing first-hand accounts from the combat veterans themselves, as well as never-before published photographs, vividly conveying the terrible experiences of the protagonists in this difficult theater of war. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2007 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993116 Weal, John 116 ACES OF JAGDGESCHADER 3 'UDET' -- WWII Jagdgeschwader 3 may not have the same immediate resonance as some of the more famous Luftwaffe fighter units, such Jagdgeschwader 2 'Richthofen,' but it is arguably the archetypal German fighter formation of World War II.

Not only did it participate in every campaign fought by the Luftwaffe (with the exceptions of Poland and Norway), it flew every major variant of the two legendary German wartime fighters, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 - starting with the Bf 109E in 1939 and ending with the Fw 190D-9 'Long-nose' in 1945. And, during the course of the hostilities, it numbered among its ranks more than 70 Knight's Cross winners (a total exceeded by only one other Jagdgeschwader).

The wealth and variety of detail afforded by such a background - which includes the historic battles of Britain, Stalingrad, Kursk, Normandy, the Ardennes, and Berlin - provides an ideal framework upon which to portray the multitude of stories, exploits, and ultimate fates of the many aces themselves, from the now unknown trio who achieved their first five kills during the Blitzkrieg in France in the late spring/early summer of 1940 to the nearly two-dozen highly acclaimed and lauded 'centurions' who flew with JG 3. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2013 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993124 Weal, John 124 ARCTIC Bf 109 AND Bf 110 ACES Once Nazi Germany had conquered Norway in 1940, just a handful of Gruppen flying the Bf 109 and Bf 110 fighters were able to shatter all opposition and dominate the air in the Arctic Circle. Yet as the dual threats of the RAF and the Red Air Force grew, the Luftwaffe was forced to increase its fighter presence to full Geschwader strength with the formation of JG 5 Eismeer (ice-sea) in early 1942.

The struggle for the frozen skies of the arctic raged on until the end of the war as the embattled JG 5 produced some of the Eastern Front's leading aces, pilots of the caliber of Theodor Weissenberger, Heinrich Ehrler, Walter Schuck, Franz Dorr, and Jakob Norz all achieving over 100 kills. Featuring first-hand accounts from the pilots, extensive research, and illustrations of the aircraft in unique winter camouflage. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2016 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993092 Weal, Tom 092 Fw 190 Defence of the Reich Aces Renowned aviation author and artist, John Weal, presents the last volume of FW-190 Aces not previously covered in the Aircraft of the Aces series. From mid-1942 until the end of the war, German fighter pilots were deployed in the defense of the homeland in an effort to halt the near-constant bombing raids by Britain and America. This book tells their story, from the moment when the Luftwaffe began to retreat to the dying days of the Reich. Using previously unpublished photographs, this book charts the story of the men who earned their status as aces while fighting a hopeless battle to protect the land and the people they loved.

1-993119 Young, Edward 119 F6F HELLCAT ACES OF VF-9 VF-9 was activated in March 1942 as part of Carrier Air Group (CAG) 9, one of the many air groups the US Navy was hurriedly forming in the aftermath of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Equipped with Grumman F4F Wildcats, VF-9 first saw combat during the Allied invasion of North Africa in November 1942, where the squadron engaged Vichy French fighters over Morocco.

Returning to the United States, VF-9 became one of the first squadrons to receive the Grumman F6F Hellcat and to deploy on the USS Essex, the first of its class of fleet carriers that would form the backbone of the US Navy's Fast Carrier Task Force. VF-9, the Hellcat, and the Essex all entered combat in the fall of 1943. In the hands of the squadron's pilots, and with other Navy fighter squadrons, the Hellcat proved superior to the Imperial Japanese Navy's A6M Zero, which had heretofore been the world's premier carrier fighter plane. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2014 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-993109 Young, Edward M 109 AMERICAN ACES AGAINST THE KAMIKAZE The Japanese High Command realized that the loss of Okinawa would give the Americans a base for the invasion of Japan. Its desperate response was to unleash the full force of the Special Attack Units, known in the west as the Kamikaze ('Divine Wind'). In a series of mass attacks in between April and June 1945, more than 900 Kamikaze airplanes were shot down. Conventional fighters and bombers accompanied the Special Attack Units as escorts, and to add their own weight to the attacks on the US fleet.

In the air battles leading up to the invasion of Okinawa, as well as those that raged over the island in the three months that followed, the Japanese lost more than 7,000 aircraft both in the air and on the ground. In the course of the fighting, 67 Navy, 21 Marine, and three USAAF pilots became aces. In many ways it was an uneven combat and on numerous occasions following these uneven contests, American fighter pilots would return from combat having shot down up to six Japanese airplanes during a single mission. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2012 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING
