Abad, Ruben La conquista de Canarias 1402-1496
It is hard to believe, but there are still episodes of the history of Spain unknown to the vast majority of Spaniards. Without a doubt, the conquest of the Canary Islands is one of them. There are hardly any easily accessible works that explain the events that led to the archipelago becoming part of the kingdom of the Catholic Monarchs. B/w and color illust. |

Cristini, Luca and Radaelli, Matteo Bartolomeo Colleoni e le compagnie di ventura nel XV secolo
Colleoni was born at Solza, in the countryside of Bergamo (then part of the Duchy of Milan), where he prepared his magnificent mortuary chapel, the Cappella Colleoni, in a shrine that he seized when it was refused him by the local confraternity, the Consiglio della Misericordia. His family was a noble one, exiled with the rest of the Guelphs by the Visconti. Bartolomeo's father Paolo seized the castle of Trezzo and held it until he was assassinated by his cousins, probably acting on order of Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan. |

Davies, Jonathan THE SIEGES OF RHODES: 1480 AND 1522
Examines the two epic sieges of Rhodes when the Hospitallers of the Order of St. John faced the might of the Ottomans. Photographs and maps included in the book fully illustrate what a nearly impossible task the Ottomans faced in both sieges. The two sieges illustrate the changes in warfare in the 40 years between them and the revolution in artillery that was taking place. Both sieges were epic in their character and scale and added to the fame and prestige of the Hospitallers. |

di Correggio, Francisco Balbi trans by E. Bradford SIEGE OF MALTA 1565, THE
Translated from the Spanish Edition of 1568, This is the history of one of the great battles of the world, written by a private soldier who was an eye-witness. The siege of Malta was a crucial moment in the long struggle between Islam and Christendom for domination of the Mediterranean, fought out by unequal forces on the small island which commands the sea-routes at the centre of that sea. The Knights of St John were a survival from the medieval world, the largest of the surviving crusading orders, and they had been driven out of their base on Rhodes in the eastern Mediterranean after a great onslaught by the Turks in 1522. Now, forty-three years later, the Turkish ruler, Suleyman the Magnificent, who had been the victor at Rhodes, was determined to finish them off. He sent out a huge armada, carrying the pick of his army, under two commanders. Against this powerful force, the Knights could only raise a handful of men and mercenaries, and had to depend on the fortifications they had raised in the thirty-five years since they first came to Malta, which bore no comparison to the massive walls and ditches on Rhodes. Francisco Balbi di Correggio was a humble soldier of fortune who enlisted under the charismatic command of the Grand Master of the Order, Jean de la Valette. The extraordinary drama that unfolded after the first appearance of the Turkish fleet in the summer of 1565 is told in his own words, giving equal credit to the courage and leadership of the Knights and the grim determination of the ordinary people of Malta. 30+ b/w illust/drawings, index. 1 vol, 224 pgs

Massimo, Predonzani and Vincenzo Alberici THE ITALIAN WARS: VOLUME 1 -- The Expedition of Charles VIII into Italy and the Battle of Fornovo
On 6 July 1495, a sudden gunshot came from the right bank of the Taro River in the Gerola Valley, near Fornovo (not far from Parma). Shortly afterwards a sky full of clouds unleashed its fury on a wretched battlefield. That gunshot kicked off a battle which changed warfare and represented the starting point of a raging conflict known as the Italian Wars. Francesco II Gonzaga, leader of the League, challenged the fury of the flooding Taro River in a clash against Charles VIII. |

By the end of the fighting, the renowned Black Legion had been wiped out and the cream of the French heavy cavalry had been destroyed, by the massed ranks of drilled and disciplined Spanish arquebusiers. Romane, Julian THE FIRST AND SECOND ITALIAN WARS, 1494-1504: Fearless Knights, Ruthless Princes and the Coming of Gunpowder Armies
Describes the course of military operations and political machinations in Italy from 1494 to 1504. The narrative begins with the French conquest of much of Italy, but then details how the French allied with the Pope's son Cesare Borgia, whose efforts ended in disaster. The French agreement with the Spanish allowed them to retake Naples only to be defeated at the Garigliano by the famous general, Gonzalo de Cordoba. Looks at how the French utilized a new method of artillery transport, the Spanish commander formulated a new system of military unit organization, and Cesare Borgia sought different systems of raising troops and forming states -- all of which led to the emergence of the so-called Military Revolution. 1 vol, 272 pgs

Written in cooperation with Claiomh, one of the leading Irish reenactment groups reconstructing the daily life of the galloglas. |

Winkler, Albert THE SWABIAN WAR OF 1499: A Contest Between Two Early Tactical Infantries
In 1499, a ferocious war was waged between the Swiss states and the German Empire. It was costly conflict and an estimated 200 villages were destroyed and over 20,000 combat troops were killed, not to mention uncounted thousands of non-combatants. But in the Swabian War, the Swiss faced another truly tactical infantry, the German Landsknechts, who based their military on the Swiss model.
