Andrews, William TANK GUN SYSTEMS: The First Thirty Years, 1916-1945: A Technical Examination
Describes and examines the main gun systems of medium and heavy tanks from first use in 1916 in World War I to those fielded in numbers to the end of World War II in 1945, including tanks of the interwar period. Specifically considered are more than 100 guns of a caliber greater than 35 mm. The emphasis is on guns mounted in turrets on heavier tracked armored fighting vehicles (greater than 15 tons) which were considered tanks. There are, though, exceptions: the naval 6 pounder guns in First World War British tanks, as well as the 75 mm guns in French medium tanks of the same period (all turretless). |

Diamond, Jon BEYOND ROME TO THE ALPS: Images of War Series
Rome was liberated on 5 June 1944 but the Italian campaign had another eleven grueling months to run. The US Fifth and British Eighth Armies drove across the Arno River, capturing Florence on 5 August. Once again The Wehrmacht's 10th and 14th Armies eluded destruction, withdrawing into the Gothic Line in the Northern Apennines. The Eighth Army, advancing along the Adriatic coast and the Fifth Army in the mountains north of Florence penetrated this strong German defensive belt between 25 August and the end of September. Yet the Allied campaign stalled due to a lethal combination of supply and manpower shortages, the early onset of winter and the rugged terrain favoring the German defenders. The Allied April spring offensive saw Eighth Army breakthrough the Argenta Gap into the Po Valley, while Fifth Army captured Bologna. After crossing the Po River the Allies fanned out across Northern Italy, before the Nazi surrender on 3 May 1945. Includes 250 black and white illustrations. 1 vol, 224 pgs

Doyle, David GERMAN PANZER II: German Army's WWII Early Light Tank Visual History
The Panzer II was Germany's first cannon-armed tank in the post World War I era. Designed and initially produced under the code name of 100-horsepower Farm Tractor, owing to the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles, the Panzer II remained in production, and in the field, well after it had been surpassed by better engineered, more heavily armed and armored vehicles, and indeed played a key part in the early victories achieved by the Blitzkrieg. |

Doyle, David GERMAN MOTORCYCLES: WWII Visual History
The Germans developed and used the motorcycle as an instrument of offensive warfare, perhaps more than any other nation in WWII. The major tasks of these units were mopping-up for the following troops and employment as an advance guard, surprise raid-like attacks against an opponent's flanks and rear, as well as pursuit of the opponent. A wide variety of machines were deployed for these tasks, both impressed and adapted civilian models, as well as variety of purpose-built military motorcycles. |

Doyle, David M10/ACHILLES: Visual History
In late 1941, the concept of a separate tank destroyer force began to jell. This force would be armed with specialized weapons. While the army's primary antitank weapons of the late 1930s were 37mm towed anti-tank guns, these were soon deemed to be inadequate against enemy armor. Accordingly, the quest for larger weapons began, as did the desire for a self-propelled antitank gun, or Gun Motor Carriage. |

Doyle, David M2/M3 BRADLEY: Images of War Series
Includes 270 color photographs, the bulk previously unpublished, of the M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle. The Bradley Fighting Vehicle, made famous through extensive media coverage of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, is given an in-depth examination. Drawing on the lessons learned in Vietnam, the Bradley was built to provide a highly mobile platform from which infantry could be inserted into the battlefield, and from which the infantry could operate. Its use soon expanded to that of a scout vehicle with anti-tank capability. Despite initial criticism from Congress, the Bradley proved itself very capable on the battlefield, destroying more Iraqi armored vehicles than did the famed Abrams tanks. Explores the many variations of the Bradley, including the heavily armed M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System. 1 vol, 240 pgs

Fletcher, David and Zaolga, Steven BRITISH BATTLE TANKS: American-Made World War II Tanks
The idea of British soldiers using American tanks was not viewed with a great deal of enthusiasm by the British Army. They perceived American tanks as being crudely made, mechanically unsophisticated, and impossible to fight in. However, once British crews got used to them and learned to cope with some of their difficulties, such as limited fuel capacity and unfamiliar fighting techniques, they started to see them in a far more positive light, in particular their innate reliability and simplicity of maintenance. |

The employment of the first tanks by the British Army on the Western Front in September 1916, although symbolic rather than decisive in its effects, ushered in a new form of warfare - tank warfare. The Encyclopedia of Tanks and Armored Fighting Vehicles is a definitive guide to over 1500 armored vehicles that have emerged from the first gasoline engine to the present day. In 1916, during World War I, the tank made its debut on the Western Front for the British, and the face of warfare changed almost overnight. In each nation's quest for battlefield dominance, many different types of armored vehicles have been produced, some more successful than others, all of which are covered in the encyclopedia, with each entry being accompanied by a photograph or artwork, full specifications and a development and career history. |

Frohlich, Michael KAMPFPANZER MAUS: The Porsche Type 205 Super-Heavy Tank
In 1944, the Maus giant battle tank, weighing almost 190 tons, was supposed to help turn the Wehrmacht's fortunes of war on the Eastern Front. Just two prototypes of this monster were delivered, for its undeniable advantages-tremendous firepower and virtually impenetrable armor-were outweighed by the disadvantages of its slowness, excessive use of materials in construction, and fuel consumption so high that it was, by that time, far beyond the Germans' ability to supply. The book includes the complete operating instructions for the tank's crew! |

Healy, Mark STUG III: Sturmgeschutz III Ausfuhrung A to G (SdKfz 142)
The German Sturmgeschutz series of assault guns was a successful and cost-effective range of armored fighting vehicles; of which some 10,000 were built during WWII. Based on the chassis of the Panzer III tank; the turret was replaced by an armored fixed superstructure fitted with a more powerful 7.5cm StuK 40 L/48 gun. Originally intended as a mobile assault weapon for infantry support; the StuG was constantly modified and saw extensive use on all battlefronts as an assault gun and tank destroyer. Its fixed superstructure with limited-traverse mounting for the main armament was simpler and cheaper to build than the turret of the battle tank; plus its low height meant it was easy to camouflage and conceal. Towards the end of the war; more StuGs were built than tanks. |

The M2 and M3 half-tracks served on every battlefront and were as recognizable as other famous American wartime vehicles. About 40,000 were produced between 1941 and 1945. They were easy to assemble, operate, and maintain, and their versatility allowed them to fulfill a variety of purposes. This volume in Pen & Sword's LandCraft series traces the design, development and manufacturing history of the M2/M3 and describes its operational role within the Allied armies. Color & black and white illustrations. |

Kinnear, James SOVIET T-62 MAIN BATTLE TANK
The T-62 is one of the most widespread tanks used by the Soviets during the Cold War. Developed from the T-55, the T-62 enjoyed a long career in the Red Army and even into the early days of the reformed Russian Army. It was the principal tank used by Soviet forces in the Soviet-Afghan War, and went on to see service with Russian forces in Chechnya and South Ossetia. It has also been employed in almost every conflict in the Middle East and Africa from its introduction into service. It remains in service with many countries throughout the world and has seen a great deal of use in the Syrian Civil War. Written by two experts on Soviet armour, it contains more than 400 stunning contemporary and modern photographs. 1 vol, 224 pgs

Kinnear, James and Sewell, Stephen SOVIET T-10 HEAVY TANK AND VARIANTS
When it was introduced into service in 1953, the T-10 represented a return to the classic Soviet heavy tank. Although considered a major threat to NATO tank forces, it also represented the end of an era. All gun-heavy tanks like the T-10 would eventually be made effectively redundant by later models like the T-62, which had powerful next-generation armament and new ammunition types. The T-10 was gradually withdrawn from service in the 1970s, though the last tanks would only leave Russian service, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation, in 1997. As such the T-10 outlived the Soviet state that had created it. |

For 30 years after WWII, the British army entered a period of intense development to use cutting-edge technology to create weapons that could crush the Soviet Union's armed forces, all the while fighting against the demands of Her Majesty's Treasury. The Army entertained ideas such as micro-tanks of about 20 tons in weight with two-man crews, massive 183mm anti-tank guns, devastating rocket artillery, colossal anti-tank guided missiles, and ended up on the cusp of building hover tanks. Mesko, Jim WALK AROUND: M5 Stuart
The light M5 Stuart tank was a much-upgraded version of the M3 Stuart. Named for Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart, the Stuarts filled the need for a light tank and, in addition to the US, they were supplied to Allied military forces. The leap from the M3 to the M5 Stuart took place in 1941, when the US Ordnance Department accepted a proposal by Cadillac to install double Cadillac V8 engines in the tank and, after remodeling the hull to accommodate the new motors, a new tank, the M5, was born. Reconnaissance units in the front lines of US forces were always accompanied by the agile M5s. With a top speed of 45 miles per hour, armor protection, and firepower, the M5A1 provided powerful support. Though not a match for heavy German armor, the Stuart was more than adequate for dealing with infantry. In addition to the US military, M5s were supplied to Britain, the Soviet Union, and France. After WWII, the Stuart saw action in such far-flung places as China, India, and Indochina. Illustrated with more than 190 photographs, plus color profiles and detailed line drawings; 80 pages. 1 vol, 80 pgs

Oliver, Dennis PANTHER: Panther and Jagdpanther Tank Units in the East - Bagration To Berlin Vol. I
In the battles to hold the Eastern Front, the Panther tank was perhaps the most important weapon in the Wehrmacht's arsenal. Desperately switched from one crisis-point to the next, the Panther battalions of the Heer, Waffen-SS, and the Luftwaffe were able to blunt the Red Army's spearheads time and again and in 1944 the Panther's body was used to create the Jagdpanther tank destroyer. This 10th book in ADH's Firefly Collection -- and the first in a series -- examines these deservedly famous tanks and their crews. |

Pallud, Jean Paul FIRST MANNED ROCKET LAUNCH: Natter, the Luftwaffe's Vertical Take-Off Interceptor - Then and Now
Details the Natter, a weapon of war born out in the closing months of World War II when Germany was desperately looking for 'wonder weapons' to fight the inevitable defeat. A vertical take-off rocket fighter, the Natter would reach the Allied bomber altitude in seconds; then the pilot would get within firing distance of a bomber and fire all 24 rockets into the nose in a single shot. The pilot then would trigger the plane to break up, a large parachute opening at the rear, popping off the nose and the pilot with it. Contains 160 mono illustrations. 1 vol, 168 pgs

Pignato, N AUTOMITRAGLIATRICI MOTOMITRAGLIATRICI ARMORED AND THE GREAT WAR
During the First World War the Italian army was not able to send out, for the limited possibilities for industry and the lack of cooperation of the Allies, 'tanks' that had appeared in Flanders since September 1916. However, the Supreme Command was able to field a small group of armored automitragliatrici on the Isonzo between 1915 and 1916. Others were prepared in late 1917, and after the retreat on the Piave were used both to counter the Austrian offensive in June at Vittorio Veneto. |

Roberts, Charles US AIRBORNE TANKS 1939-1945
Opens with an investigation into the 1930s efforts by Britain, the Soviet Union, and the USA into the development of, or adaptation of, light tanks for airborne operations. WWII accelerated their efforts, but conventional aircraft limited use to existing airfields, negating the effect. Development shifted to gliders and the 28th Airborne Tank Battalion was born. Detailed and comprehensive study covers design and deployment of American airborne tanks from the earliest concepts to their actual use, by British units, on D-Day and during Operation Varsity, the Rhine crossing. Includes 100 black and white illustrations. 1 vol, 208 pgs

Saunders, Tim THE CHURCHILL CROCODILE: 141 Regiment RAC (The Buffs)
Explores how the British Army started the development of flame throwers in 1938, which then evolved into being tank-mounted. The 141 (The Buffs) Regiment RAC had been converted to Churchill Tanks at the end of 1941, and in early 1944, they were earmarked for another change of role to the Crocodile conversion of the new Mk VII Churchill tank. This flame throwing system was secret and started to arrive with the regiment in April 1944. After D-Day, there followed a period of misuse, but by the middle of the Normandy campaign, a clear doctrine for the use of the Crocodile emerged and they were in great demand. Contains 70 mono illustrations. 1 vol, 320 pgs

Schneider, Wolfgang TIGERS IN COMBAT III: Operation, Training, Tactics
Tigers in Combat Volume III closes the gap between the unit histories of volumes 1 and 2 and the technical descriptions in the Jentz and Spielberger books. For the first time, efforts are described in detail of what was taken to create units and what was required to keep the Tiger tank in action regarding handling and operating the vehicle. Other chapters deal with crew training and specific tactical aspects to employ such a heavy tank under all fighting conditions. |

Stokes, Neil SU-85 and SU-100 ON THE BATTLEFIELD
The SU-85 and SU-100 self-propelled guns were based on the proven chassis of the T-34 Medium Tank, and were used primarily in the antitank role. From mid-1943 onward, the SU-85 gave the Soviet forces a useful tank destroyer with a significant firepower advantage over the T-34's 76.2mm gun. With the introduction of the T-34/85 in early 1944, the SU-85 design was upgraded with a 100mm gun to retain its firepower advantage, though a shortage of 100mm guns led to a number of improved hulls being armed with 85mm guns as the SU-85M. This book provides a pictorial history of the development and combat deployment of the SU-85, SU-85M and SU-100, illustrated with around 100 photographs. 1 vol, 112 pgs

Traces the evolution of the panzers from their modest beginnings in the 1930s to the most powerful German tanks used in World War II. Ware, Pat and Delf, Brian THE CENTURION TANK: - Images of War Series
Few tank designs have been as effective, versatile and long-lived as that of the British Centurion. Conceived during the Second World War as the answer to the superior German Tiger and Panther tanks and to the lethal 88mm gun, this 52-ton main battle tank incorporated the lessons British designers had learned about armored fighting vehicles during the conflict, and it was free of the major faults that had impaired the other British tank designs of the time. The Centurion was so successful that it served in the British Army and in numerous other armies across the world from 1945 until the 1990s. |
